How to Spot and Avoid Phishing Emails

Phishing emails are one of the most common ways cybercriminals target individuals and organizations. Stay alert to avoid falling for scams! Here’s a quick guide:

Common Signs of a Phishing Email:
  1. Sender Email Address: Display names can be misleading, verify the sender email
  2. Urgent Language: If an email urges you to take immediate action, step back
  3. Strange Links/Attachments: Hover over links to check if it takes you to a legitimate website.
Other flags to look out for:
Generic greetings, requests for personal information, typos/errors.
Report Phishing:
If you suspect an email is phishing, don’t respond!  Flag it using email tools like Outlook’s “Report” button or forward it to abuse@chapman.edu.

Phishing scams are always evolving, stay informed and cautious to protect yourself!
