As Chapman University gears up for Giving Day on April 10, one group of students is working behind the scenes to rally support—the dedicated students at Phonathon. Each day, this enthusiastic team of callers connects with alumni, parents and supporters to share stories and encourage participation in one of Chapman’s biggest fundraising efforts.
For these student employees, their role is more than just a part-time job, it’s an opportunity to hone communication and relationship-building skills that will serve them well. Many former student callers have gone on to successful careers in sales, marketing, fundraising, communications, and more, crediting their time at Phonathon as an invaluable steppingstone.
“My time at Phonathon shaped my career in ways I never expected,” said Kate Hartshorn ’23. “I started as a freshman, looking for a job, but it quickly became so much more. Connecting with alumni, hearing their stories and learning about philanthropy opened the door to my career in fundraising.
“The experience helped me develop invaluable skills, from donor stewardship to cold calling—skills I now use every day as a development associate at Save the Redwoods League.”
Phonathon is also known for its fun and collaborative environment. Friendly competition and the shared camaraderie among student workers make each shift enjoyable. Every donation secured fuels their motivation as they work toward their shared goal of making a lasting impact.
“One of the best parts of working at Phonathon is the team atmosphere,” said Bailey Abarca ’25. “As a student supervisor, I love fostering a sense of community. Calling can be tiring, but we keep the energy high.

“My favorite part of working here are friendships I’ve made with people from different majors I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Connecting with alumni has also been inspiring. Hearing their stories, learning from their experiences and seeing how Chapman shaped their lives is rewarding. It’s a reminder that we’re all part of the same legacy.”
With Giving Day just days away, Phonathon is buzzing with excitement as they play a vital role in mobilizing the Chapman Family. Their dedication is a reminder that every phone call contributes to the ongoing success of Chapman University. This Giving Day, alumni, parents, faculty and staff are encouraged to join the movement, support Chapman and celebrate the spirit of philanthropy that keeps the university thriving.
