Chapman University Welcomes New Middle Eastern and North African Achievement Director

Chapman University is excited to welcome Younes Mourchid, Ph.D., as its new Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Achievement Director. Dr. Mourchid brings a diverse background in international development education, higher education, technology and nonprofit program management to the university.

Dr. Mourchid has more than two decades of teaching experience, previously holding faculty positions at San Francisco State University, Cogswell College, University of California, Santa Cruz and University of Southern California (USC). His Ph.D. research at USC in International Development Education focused on key issues facing MENA countries, such as cultural pluralism, human rights and identity education. His dissertation examined Morocco’s higher education reforms and their impact on minority rights, specifically the status of Berber languages.

Dr. Mourchid also established Diablo Valley College’s first centralized tutoring center, where student use of the center increased by 150% in its first year. Additionally, Dr. Mourchid expanded the Online Writing Lab he had developed at USC. This initiative contributed to a 32% improvement in student retention and success over two academic years.

Most recently, Dr. Mourchid has held senior learning and development positions within tech companies such as Miro, Atlassian, Docker and Coursera. His work prioritized user-centric learning solutions, program design and skill development.

“Dr. Mourchid brings a unique set of skills that compliment the team in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” said Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Reg Chhen Stewart, Ph.D. “I was impressed with his student-centric approach to campus climate issues and his deep understanding of the faculty experience in higher education. I am eager for him to begin working towards supporting our students on educational and professional pursuits. I want to thank the search committee and all the members of the campus community who participated in the search process.”

Please join the team in welcoming Dr. Mourchid as they continue to empower and advance the Middle Eastern and North African communities through impactful programs. The team looks forward to seeing the positive change he will bring to this role.
