Chapman University’s Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts will host three distinguished professional dance companies during the 2024-25 season as part of the Marybelle Musco Contemporary Dance Series. Featured performers include Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Doug Varone and Dancers. The series was first envisioned by the center’s co-founding benefactor and long-time university supporter, Marybelle Musco (D. Univ. ’13).
Following last year’s generous contribution, Marybelle has continued her remarkable support for the arts at Chapman with another gift to fund the second year of the prestigious dance series. Each company will perform on campus and participate in Chapman’s immersive Leap of Art Residencies, engaging with students in the College of Performing Arts.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have a passionate and dedicated patron of dance like Marybelle Musco,” said Anne Hogan, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Performing Arts and the Musco Center for the Arts. “Her ongoing support allows our talented students to not only witness world-class performances but also to learn from these top-tier companies through master classes, workshops and open rehearsals.”
The Leap of Art Residencies further enriches the experience, offering performing artists opportunities to engage with the Chapman community through guest-instructed classes across academic departments and participation in community panel discussions.
“These residencies allow students to build meaningful connections with the visiting companies, forming mentorships that will influence their careers,” said Marybelle.
The series opened on September 20, 2024, with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, renowned for its exuberant and boundary-pushing performances. The ensemble has captivated audiences worldwide with its dynamic choreography by leading American and international artists, and the thrilling performance at the Musco Center proved no exception.
“I saw Hubbard Street Dance Chicago earlier this year, and they are incredible, and I was so excited to welcome them to Chapman,” said Marybelle.
On October 24, 2024, Dance Theatre of Harlem will bring its globally celebrated ballet company to campus. Known for its artistic innovation, community engagement, and promotion of multicultural inclusivity, Dance Theatre of Harlem continues to inspire audiences worldwide with its empowering message.
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing Dance Theatre of Harlem perform, and I’m thrilled to bring them to Chapman,” Marybelle shared.
The series concludes on February 1, 2025, with Doug Varone and Dancers, whose emotionally charged and technically masterful work has earned them widespread recognition. Known for their storytelling through movement, the company fosters dialogue with diverse audiences worldwide.
“I love all kinds of performances, but dance holds a special place in my heart,” said Marybelle. “It’s an honor to support innovative choreography and provide these opportunities at Chapman.”
