Angela Bassett, Commencement Ceremony Keynote Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient

Award-winning actress Angela Bassett will be Chapman’s keynote speaker at the university’s 2023 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. on Wilson Field. Best known for her work in film and television since the late 1980s, Bassett will also receive an honorary doctorate in the arts at the ceremony.

A graduate of Yale University, Bassett garnered critical acclaim for portraying Tina Turner in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress–Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She won a second Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress–Motion Picture for her role in the 2022 film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” garnering another Academy Award for Best Actress nomination. She has also received nine Emmy Award nominations to date. 

Chapman sends a special thanks to Dean Stephen Galloway of the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts for his instrumental work securing Bassett as the keynote speaker.
