During the summer, Chapman University allows most departments on the Orange campus to offer summer work hours. To ensure an uninterrupted high level of service to all community members, department heads must consider operational needs, department size, impact on co-workers, and particular times during which summer hours may not be feasible. Departments with published office hours must remain open during their normal business hours.
Staff working in departments that are able to accommodate summer work hours, and staff with an approved Voluntary Flexible Work Arrangement that modifies their schedule, must discuss their preferred schedule with their department head and obtain approval of their proposed schedule before changing their work hours. Schedule choices for staff include:
- Work hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-half-hour lunch period (typically 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.).
- Work hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-half-hour lunch period (typically 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.).
- You may continue to work the normal operating hours for university offices from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch period.
- Other Flexible Work Times might also be available for you under our Staff and Administrator Voluntary Flexible Work Policy. Please review the policy options carefully and discuss with your supervisor, and please remember that schedules extending the 8-hour work day in exchange for a day off during the work week, such as a 4/10 or 9/80, require adherence to strict implementation protocols mandated by California. Department heads interested in exploring these flexible work time alternatives for their staff must contact Abbie Kane, Director of Total Rewards, to review required steps prior to implementation.
Administrators who wish to adjust their schedules should consult with the appropriate division or department head to ensure consistency with the scope of their responsibilities and essential business operations of their departments.
Summer work hours will be in effect Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, August 19, 2022.
