Statement on Student Employment and Temporary Policy on Student Employment

Statement on Student Employment

We recognize that student employees enrich our workplace and add significant value to the services we provide to faculty, staff, and fellow students.  Their absences in our hallways and offices is felt by everyone, prompting many colleagues to ask us to reconsider our temporary suspension of student employment.

In the interest of student health and safety, onsite/on-campus student employment remains suspended until further notice.  Only a limited number of graduate students that are working in our G-Ship Program (GRAs, GTAs, GWAs, and GCAs) remain onsite and working.  No other onsite/on-campus student employment is allowed at this time.

During this temporary suspension of student employment, student workers (both undergraduate and graduate) will continue receiving biweekly pay for their regularly scheduled hours.  This expressly includes those student workers (both undergraduate and graduate) who are funded by internal or external grants.  The Office of Research will work with faculty on sponsor allowability and any need to reallocate expenses to alternate Chapman funds.  Rest assured:  we will take care of our students during this temporary cessation of work.

That said, many students have expressed their willingness to working remotely if the nature of their work permits.  This has the support of numerous faculty and staff and requires our additional assessment.

Temporary Policy on Student Employment

Based on your feedback, we will amend our policy.  Allowing students to work remotely maintains our primary commitment to safeguarding their health and well-being while also allowing them to continue their contributions to the campus mission.  This is a win-win, and we are pleased to amend our temporary policy on student employment as follows:

  • Graduate students in our G-Ship Program (the graduate student holds a GRA, a GTA, a GWA, or a GCA appointment) will continue working.
  • All other graduate and undergraduate student employment that is performed onsite/on-campus is suspended until further notice.  Student employees will continue to receive payment.
  • Graduate and undergraduate students can work remotely if all 3 of the following conditions are met:
    • Both the student and the supervisor agree that the student can work remotely; AND
    • The student can easily perform all work from a remote location and has the equipment to do so, AND
    • The remote location is offsite/off-campus (e.g., truly remote; not performed on Chapman University property).

To continue getting paid, student workers must continue to enter their hours each payroll cycle. Students can find instructions here:  Reporting Student Time.

Supervisors of must continue to approve student worker hours each payroll cycle.  Supervisors can find instructions here:  Approving Student Time.
