Chapman partners with Give Something Back non-profit to help low-income students

Give Something Back, a philanthropic organization, has given $1 million to Chapman University to help provide four-year tuition scholarships for students who have faced extreme hardship, especially those who have experienced the incarceration or loss of a parent or who have spent time in foster care.

“We are grateful for the generosity of Give Something Back and excited to be able to put their gift to use immediately for students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend college,’ said Daniele Struppa, Ph.D., president of Chapman University. “Embracing ways for people to improve their lives through education is instrumental in helping society, and we are pleased to be able to partner with Give Something Back to accomplish this.”

“These are students who have endured great adversity, and they could use a break,” said Robert O. Carr, the founder and chairman of Give Something Back. “I am honored that Give Something Back’s partnership with Chapman University is making it possible for so many deserving students to go to college and transform their lives.”

Carr introduced the Illinois-based program and presented a $1 million check to university officials at Chapman University’s faculty athenaeum on Wednesday, May 17.

Carr, an entrepreneur, philanthropist and author, grew up in a financially strapped household in rural Illinois. As a high school senior, he received a $250 scholarship from a local women’s club. The gift inspired him decades later to establish Give Back and help other working-class students.

The Give Something Back gift to Chapman will be used to fund scholarships for a total of 50 students over the next five years, including four students who will be matriculating this fall.
