‘This is where you start’ Class of 2019 officially welcomed to Chapman University with tradition, fireworks and advice

Amidst inspiring speeches, fireworks and the glowing smart phones of thousands of proud parents, Chapman University’s Class of 2019 was officially welcomed to campus on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Opening Convocation 2015.

Held on Holly and David Wilson Field, the festive evening event was the first gathering of the entire Class of 2019, a cohort of some 1,450 freshmen. Students were heralded by a bagpiper and presented with white stoles they were encouraged to use as a kind of wearable scrapbook of their four years at Chapman.

Thoughts for the journey

After a busy day of moving into housing, finding their way through the residence halls and meeting new roommates, it was also an opportunity for students and families to reflect on the possibilities ahead in the next four years.

With a striking sunset for a backdrop, the new freshman class is welcomed to Chapman University at Convocation 2015.

“At Chapman you’re going to be asking questions. Different types of questions. Questions like – What is good? What is just? What is beauty? Why is the world the way it is and how can we make it a better world?” President Jim Doti said. “I just want you to know that during that journey you are about to embark on, the faculty, the administration and the staff here at Chapman University are excited about joining you in that search for truth and beauty. Welcome to Chapman!”

Help and be helped

In turn, remember to also offer that kind of support, Chancellor Danielle Struppa told the students.

“Listen to the many inspiring stories of those who have preceded you,” he said. “Make sure you seek their support in your journey and strive to support those around you. This is where you start. This is why you are here.”

Delivering the traditional Aims of Education Address at convocation was Jennifer Funk, Ph.D., associate professor of biological sciences. Funk also urged the students to “broaden their paths” as a way to find surprising opportunities. She recounted how an undergraduate research experience in the Alaskan wilderness terrified her but also sparked her passion for biology and environmental issues.

“It was there, not in any lecture hall or library, that I discovered my passion for biology,” Funk said. “Today my research program at Chapman focuses on understanding how plant communities respond to environmental change and how to restore damaged ecosystems. I am doing what I love and I discovered what I love and I discovered my passion by pushing myself out of my comfort zone and going on an adventure.”

Convocation also officially launched Orientation Week for new and transfer students. Activities include festive meals, a trip to Segerstrom Center for the Arts for an immersion in culture and a chance to be part of a drum circle, an all-University casino party, a “beach party” at the Masson Beach Club and pool, and much more.
