Bob Bassett, dean of the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, has been named the 2013 Media Mentor of the Year by
Variety
. Bassett is the subject of a two-page feature spread in the magazine, which showcases the college’s partnerships in Asia and its projects-based approach to film education.
“Instead of teaching theory for a couple of years and then allowing students to make films, our philosophy was always to put a camera in their hands on day one and have them start making short films right away,” he says. “Then the theory becomes far more interesting.”
