Too warm to stay inside? Chill out at the annual Free Family-Friendly Concert Series

Celebrate summer – along with great music, frozen bananas and a bit of dancing –at Chapman University’s annual Free Family-Friendly Concert Series on Friday July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, all in the comfort of beautiful Attallah Piazza.

This year’s concert series returns with a lineup of three performances, featuring two old favorites and one sure-to-please new addition.  Save the dates!

  • The Irish-flavored Bracken Band kicks off the series on Friday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m.  This Los Angeles-based band makes its Chapman debut with Celtic- and folk-influenced music reminiscent of The Pogues, Van Morrison, The Waterboys and Alison Krauss. Be sure to arrive early at 5:30 p.m. to catch a free lesson of contra dancing, a kissing cousin to the old English tradition of country folk dancing. The Living Tradition of Anaheim welcomes old and young alike to give it a try.
  • The Alley Cats, traditional crowd-pleasers in the Chapman series, return the following Friday, Aug. 2. With beginnings at Disneyland’s “Blast to the Past,” this a cappella vocal quartet has wowed audiences from the White House to Las Vegas with its humorous take on harmonious doo-wop classics. Cruising in to join the cats again this year will be the vintage car display on the west side of Attallah Piazza, courtesy of a local car club.
  • The Nocturnes, an original Orange County group named “Best Beach & Surf Band” by the Orange County Music Awards’ culminates the series on Friday, Aug. 9. They’ll take audiences back to the California sound of the early ’60s. Enjoy a taste of the old fun zone days with $1 frozen bananas and free photos at the photo booth.

All concerts are held in Attallah Piazza, in the center of campus, and are free and open to the community. The campus opens at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking, with the concerts starting at 6:30 p.m.  Blankets, lawn chairs and picnics are welcome.  There will also be a food truck at each event.  (Barbeque grills and smoking are prohibited.)

Free concert parking is available in the Lastinger Parking Structure (under the Chapman football stadium – accessible from Walnut Avenue).
