On newsstands soon, Chapman University’s own special section in O.C. Register

ocrTo better connect its subscribers with inspiring leaders, developments and activities at local universities, the Orange County Register is introducing three standalone weekly sections beginning the first week of April, with Chapman University’s special section debuting Tuesday, April 2.

The Chapman University community can find copies of the Chapman section on the newsstands located throughout campus.

Similar sections focusing on University of California, Irvine, and California State University, Fullerton, will appear Monday, April 1, and Wednesday, April 3, respectively.

The six-page sections will include features and stories on all aspects of campus life, research projects, student and faculty achievement, and alumni impact in Orange County. The goal is to introduce readers to the vibrant university communities that are centers of ideas and innovation that reach far beyond the physical borders of each campus.

“We are launching these sections to tell the tremendously rich and largely untold stories coming from our local universities – places of great importance where meaningful relationships and deeper connections to the community are formed,” said Aaron Kushner, Register owner and publisher.

Rob Curley, who led a complete re-launch and introduced major improvements to all 22 of the Register’s community newspapers in recent months as deputy editor of local news, will oversee the sections. Thomas Martinez, an 11-year veteran reporter who has covered the city of Irvine and served as editor for several community newspapers including Irvine World News, will serve as full-time editor for the university sections.

“UC Irvine, Chapman and Cal State Fullerton are centers of growth in Orange County, and launching pads for progressive ideas and innovation,” said Steve Churm, longtime journalist and vice president at the Register in charge of the paper’s special sections and publications. “Our new university sections will act as community curators and connectors, and celebrate the positive impact that students, faculty and alumni are making in the county and far beyond.”
