Leader of emerging church movement Brian D. McLaren to speak at Founders Day

Brian D.  McLaren, an activist, pastor, author and leader in the emerging church movement, will be the featured guest speaker for this year’s Founders Day events, Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16.

Friday’s events are free to the Chapman University community. McLaren, will give three talks on Friday, including:

  • Emergence – the Church in the 21st Century, 10:45 p.m.
  • Christian Identity in a Multi-faith World, 1:30 p.m.
  • Faith Seeking Action – A Theology of Institutions, Communities and Movements, 3:15 p.m.

Friday evening McLaren will lead a dialogue titled “Will the Future Have a Church?” Joining him for this conversation will be Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle, Rev.Tripp Fuller and Rev. Rich McCullen.

Friday’s talks will be in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel of the Fish Interfaith Center. A book signing will follow the final afternoon lecture.

McLaren is author of A Generous Orthodoxy, Naked Spirituality and A New Kind of Christianity. A frequent guest on television, radio, and news programs, he has appeared on All Things Considered, Larry King Live, Nightline, and Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. Time listed McLaren as one of American’s 25 most influential evangelicals.

Preaching at worship on Saturday, March 16, will be Rev. Geoffrey Black, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. Worship will also feature Disciple on Campus students and honor Church Leaders of the Year Rev. Dr. Mildred Butler, pastor of United Christian Church and Rev. Dr. Joseph McGowan, pastor of Altadena Community Church. Other Founders Day offerings on March 16 include a prospective student/parent event, campus tours, a planned giving session, an additional McLaren lecture, a concert performed by the Chapman University Choir and a Disciples on Campus alumni party.
