Speech and Debate team tops the competition at recent tournament

Chapman University’s Speech and Debate Team won the most individual awards of any four-year university competing at the 2012 California Double-Up Tournament, held this month at Azusa Pacific University.

Contributing to the team’s overall ranking were outstanding individual achievements in several categories. In the category of After Dinner Speaking, which challenges students to write and deliver a speech meant to entertain and make a point through humor, winners included Mark Pampanin, first; Josh Nudelman, second; and Rubina Bernabe, third.

In the category of Informative Speaking, a competition that showcases speeches meant to reveal new and exciting technological breakthroughs or social trends, winners included: Shelby Stanton, first; Cassidy Jensen, second; Ashley Kubiniec, third; and Valerie Swartz, fourth.

In the event of Persuasive Speaking, winners included Nikole Weber in first and Renz Lorenzo in second.

Shelby Stanton also earned first place in the category of Dramatic Interpretation.

Other team members competing included Emily Voogt, Annelise Yang, David Taylor and Tim Seavey.

The team, a program within the Department of Communication Studies, is now gearing up for its second competition of the season upcoming at Pasadena City College.
