Confucian scholar Roger Ames will deliver a guest lecture Wednesday, Oct. 10, on campus.


One of the world’s preeminent scholars of Confucianism and a distinguished professor of philosophy will lecture Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in Beckman Hall, room 404.

The talk “Confucian Role Ethics” will be delivered by Roger Ames, Ph.D., an expert researcher on the topic of Chinese philosophy both in China and the West. Ames has spent many years abroad in China and Japan studying Chinese philosophy. He has been Visiting Professor at National Taiwan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Peking University, a fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and has lectured extensively at various universities around the world.

A professor at the
University of Hawai
i, Ames has been the recipient of many grants and awards, including several from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has authored, edited, and translated some 30 books, and has written numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals. He was the subject editor for the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean entries in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In addition to his own research, Ames has served for the past 25 years as professor and editor of
Philosophy East and West
, one of the University of Hawaii’s oldest and most prestigious journals.
