Professor Vernon Smith

Professor Vernon Smith, 2002 Nobel laureate in economics, is in Chile this week and will receive an extraordinary honor – he will be appointed an Honorary Fellow at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, a private institution in Valparaiso, “for his seminal contributions on experimental economics and liberal thinking,” the university has announced. He shares this recognition with other renowned economists, including Ludwig Erhard, Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman.

Smith will give a lecture at the university, “Balance Sheet Crises: Causes, Consequences and Cure Scenarios,” at a ceremony that will be attended by nearly 150 Chilean economists and more than 200 students. The lecture and ceremony will be Friday, Sept. 28.
