An article about international banking crises by Clas Wihlborg, Ph.D., the Fletcher Jones Chair in International Business at Chapman University’s Argyros School of Business, has been chosen as an Outstanding Paper Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2012, by the Emerald Group.

The article is titled “International Comparisons of Bank Regulation, Liberalization, and Banking Crises” and was published in the Journal of Financial Economic Policy.

Every year Emerald invites each journal’s editorial team  – made up of eminent academics and managers – to nominate what they believe has been that title’s Outstanding Paper and up to three Highly Commended Papers from the previous 12 months.

“Dr. Wihlborg’s paper has been included among these and was selected as it was one of the most impressive pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2011,” according to the letter Dr. Wihlborg received from Emerald Group.

“The analytical review and comparisons of various proxies for banking crises, credit expansion, financial liberalization, and bank regulation and supervision show that differences between proxies explain some contradictory results in the literature, as well as differences in sensitivity of the likelihood of banking crisis to changes in explanatory factors,” said Dr. Wihlborg. “Understanding of the construction of different proxies can help the researcher choose the relevant proxy for the research objective in cross-country and time series analyses. Thus, the usefulness of a particular proxy depends on the research objective.”
