A team of Chapman University public relations and advertising students is taking aim against childhood obesity with a multifaceted campaign designed to help children and their parents battle the bulge. It’s all part of the 2012 Bateman Case Study Competition, a PRSSA national contest in which students design a public relations campaign for an actual client.

This year’s Bateman challenge asks students to help
United Way Worldwide
tackle the problem of
childhood obesity
. The goals are to increase awareness among children, teenagers and their parents of the serious short and long-term consequences of obesity, inform them of the steps they can take to adopt a healthier lifestyle and provide incentives to take action.

Chapman’s students have designed and are implementing a multifaceted campaign called PowerUP! Students are working directly with children at local schools, helping them learn about nutrition, boost their daily physical activity and understand how health can impact their future careers. Partners in this are the American Heart Association, local firefighters and Chapman dancers and athletes.

After an extensive judging process executed by
Public Relations Society of America
members and other professionals, three finalist teams will be chosen to present their campaigns to sponsor representatives in May. The first-place team receives $2,500 and a trophy; second place receives $1,500 and a plaque; and third place receives $1,000 and a plaque. All teams are recognized at the PRSSA National Conference.
