Black & White Film Fest opens with Beatles' 'Hard Day's Night'

Everyone’s fall favorite is back – Jim, Jerry and Marla’s Black and White Film Festival! Grab a sweater and enjoy free screenings of cinema classics projected by state-of-the-art equipment in beautiful Attallah Piazza. There will be free popcorn and movie candy, too. Screenings start at 8 p.m. Get ready for:

• A Hard Day’s Night, Friday, Sept. 9. From director Richard Lester, this quick-cutting and comical classic rock and roll movie about The Beatles and Paul McCartney’s very clean grandfather is still an influential piece of music genre filmmaking. “Not only is this film not dated, it may even look fresher than it did in 1964,” says New York Magazine.
• Roman Holiday, Friday, Sept. 16. Audrey Hepburn earned an Academy Award for her portrayal of a coddled princess who cuts lose in Rome, falling for an American reporter who plays dumb and whisks the plucky princess off for a grand tour of the sights. A posthumous Oscar for best screenplay was awarded to blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo for this charming romance.
• The Philadelphia Story, Friday, Sept. 23. Gary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart star in this unforgettable comedy where high society meets true love and high jinks ensue.
• Executive Suite, Friday, Sept. 30. A stylish and edgy tale of love, power and backstabbing in the corporate world. The 1954 Oscar-winning film stars William Holden. (So that’s where Don Draper learned all his tricks!)
• The Maltese Falcon, Friday, Oct. 7. Listen, pal, it’s Humphrey Bogart as tough-guy detective Sam Spade. Get the picture? If you miss it, you’d better have a waterproof alibi.
• War of the Worlds, Friday, Oct. 28. This is the 1953 version of H.G. Wells’ sci-fi novel, set in Southern California. Hideous gun-toting Martians invade – just in time for Halloween!

In the event of rain, movies will be moved indoors, with signs announcing the new location posted in the piazza.
