Unless you’ve gone all Rip Van Winkle on us, you’ve probably heard something about this 150
th
anniversary Chapman University is celebrating this year. And just when you thought the fun was done,
Chapman Magazine
has one more anniversary hurrah. And we all get to play.
For its summer issue, the magazine is planning a “150 Things We Love About Chapman” feature, and the editor needs everyone’s help. In short, anything and everything is fair game for the list. Some of us are partial to the chocolate pecan bars sold in the Leatherby Libraries Rotunda Café and the frosted crispy bars in Jazzman’s. Other folks we know love to watch the Disneyland fireworks from the top floor of Beckman Hall. Some rave about professors who show up at student club meetings to lend support. Or maybe you have a favorite study carrel at Leatherby Libraries.

I absolutely love how close knit the Chapman campus is an how incredibly safe I always felt about walking home at night. I love that our president is personable and that the Filling Station nearby has the hands down best cornmeal pancakes I’ve ever discovered. I love the professional feeling that overwhelmed me whenever I walked into Beckman, and the fact that after graduating 6 years ago, I still keep in touch with my favorite teachers. I might be able to compile this list of 150 myself, because I absolutely love my college choice.
I love the grilled cheese sandwiches from the food court!
I absolutely love all the beautiful statues, sculptures, monuments and fountains around campus. Sixteen years after graduating it still continues to be one of my favorite places to walk about in Southern California.
I love Dick Doetkott dressed up in a toga on the steps of Memorial Hall, talking about the history of oratory; or (and who could forget?) Bob Slayton having Dean Mulch pose as a sub for him so he could come in dressed as a member of the mob, executing an explosive ‘hit’ on a costumed bag of ice cubes to bring home a theme on the history of cities in America. I love Jim Miller, an absolute Chapman legend in my eyes, and the things his “mama used to say” breathing life into the truths of American folklore; or President Doti, serving up pancakes at a midnight breakfast in the residence halls during finals week. There are so many things to love about Chapman, but there is no doubt that the faculty, and THEIR love– their engagement with the students, their reaching out and connecting with them; finding creative and personal ways to support them in learning– these things still mean the most to me as I sit here almost 20 years after graduating with my degree.

I love all of the different graduations. Each school has their own energy, their own vibe. It is fun to watch the unfolding of events. I am off to another one–but holding all of the Sodexo and Facilities people in the light. They will be earning their overtime this weekend. Congrats to all of the grads.
