Student sings with Idol runner-up in finals

By Sarah Van Zanten

Tonight Cody Morgan ’11 will sing with American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee in the final stage of “OC Can You Sing.”  Morgan has been named one of four finalists in the amateur singing competition sponsored by Pacific Symphony Orchestra.

Morgan, a double major in Music Education and Music and Vocal Performance, has been singing since before he can remember. “I was born a singer,” joked Morgan. He is a part of Phi Gamma Delta and SoundCheck.  After receiving an email about the competition Morgan decided to apply.

The competition process began with YouTube entries, escalated to in-person auditions with the director of Pacific Symphony and this weekend is a three-night live audition in front of 2000 audience members each night.

For this competition he will be singing, “If Ever I Would Leave You” from Camelot.  The winner will be determined by a Pacific Symphony panel as well as audience votes and applause.  The competition website states: “the winner of the competition will be a featured soloist for three more performances in one of our Pops programs in the 2011-12 season!”

“Hopefully I will be able to meet Katharine and be able to further my singing career!” gleamed Morgan.

Morgan will sing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. March 17-19.  For more information on how to attend the concert visit
