Speaking at the next Faculty Forum at noon Tuesday, March 15, will be Tibor Machan, Ph.D., professor and holder of the R.C. Hoiles Chair in Business Ethics and Free Enterprise at the Argyros School of Business and Economics, on the topic of “Government Regulations and the American System of Justice.”
“In American criminal law one may only be burdened with punishment and fines if one is proven guilty of a crime — that, roughly, is an important feature of our legal system. But there are areas where it isn’t practiced and the equivalent of prior restrained is, instead, practiced. We will look at one area where this is the case and see if it’s justified,” Dr. Machan says.
Then on Wednesday, March 16, Professor Sally Rubin will present “Social Issue Documentary Filmmaking and Community Engagement.”
Professor Rubin’s recent feature documentary film, “Deep Down: a story from the heart of coal country,” broadcast nationally on PBS in November. The film follows the lives of two friends in eastern Kentucky over a three-year period, as they find their lifelong friendship threatened by a mountaintop removal coal mine in their backyards. The Faculty Forum series is Chapman’s traditional staff/faculty lecture program that pairs stimulating talks with all-you-can-eat Sodexo luncheon buffets. The forums are held in Beckman Hall 404. Lunch is $5.
