A mom's view from the bleachers makes compelling reading in Orange Coast

What’s it like to have a “6-foot-9 man-child” make it to the UCLA basketball program and the hallowed court of Pauley Pavilion? It’s a wild ride, but a knotty one, too, writes Catherine Keefe, adjunct professor, Department of English, in this month’s issue of
Orange Coast
magazine.

“I began the season believing it was enough for James to be on the team, but I also realized he sat in an athletic pressure cooker. What’s a mother supposed to do when an entire fan base, a team, and a coach are counting on her son?” says Keefe in an article titled “One Mother’s Playbook” that chronicles her experience as the mother of a Bruin basketball player and his ultimate chase for a pro contract.

The story is
available online
through the end of March.
