A stunning and luminous black sculpture that won a Lorenzo il Magnifico de Medici Medal at the Florence Biennale in Italy has been donated to Chapman University by President Jim Doti and his wife, Professor Lynne Doti.

Despite gray skies and a chilly breeze, a happy crowd turned out for the Friday, Feb. 25 unveiling ceremony in Escalette Plaza of
Emergence
by Laguna Beach artist Nicholas Hernandez. While a nearby gelato cart served up frosty treats, President Doti dedicated the sculpture in honor of all Chapman students.

The sculpture was included in the “Pensamientos Illuminacion de Arte” visiting exhibit at Leatherby Libraries in October when it caught the Dotis’ attention.
Emergence
is crafted from high density foam, 30 yards of fiberglass mat, 14 gallons of resin and 11 gallons of Bondo putty. It was installed in Escalette Plaza near the front steps leading to Hashinger Science Center.
