Leatherby Libraries is presenting “A Brush with Nature,” an exhibit of botanical art by The Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California, now through Feb. 17, with a champagne and dessert reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, which will include special demonstrations and presentations by some of the featured artists.
Botanical art has a long and storied history, as references for medicinal herbals, as documentation for early explorations to new worlds, and as floralegia that lavishly illustrates the gardens of royalty and collectors. During the past 50 years, there has been a resurgence in this art form, which entwines scientific accuracy with fine art and visual realism.
Twenty-three artists with the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California are exhibiting more than 75 works of art in watercolor, colored pencil, ink and graphite in the Leatherby exhibit. The Southern California guild is a local chapter of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA). Many of the artworks on display are also available for sale.
Admission to the reception is free, but reservations are requested and may be arranged by emailing
brushwithnature@me.com.
The exhibit is also available for viewing during
regular library hours.
