Godspell rehearsals a day by day project as opening night nears

Years before he wrote the musical hit Wicked, composer Stephen Schwartz created another little something you all might have heard of – Godspell, the joyous rock musical very loosely based on the Gospel according to Matthew.

Now Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts, Department of Theatre, is staging the beloved classic in Waltmar Theater, with a run opening Sept. 30 and continuing through Oct. 9. We paid a visit to rehearsals and were impressed at the energy and talent we saw in action. The show is looking to be a lot of fun, incorporating on-stage seating, playful choreography and whimsical staging all under the guidance of director Todd Nielsen.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 and Oct. 6-9,  with an additional 2 p.m. performance Oct. 9. Tickets are $15 to $20. Check the COPA website for more details about this show and other events there in the next couple weeks, including faculty recitals and an appearance by the Josephy Wytko Saxophone Quartet.
