• Consider these new admission and enrollment statistics and then give the crews in those departments some cookies – they need the energy. According to the latest numbers, undergraduate applications jumped from 6,407 for Fall ’08 to 9,570 for Fall ’10. And the university continues to attract more students from beyond Orange County, testament to its growing reputation. Ten years ago 24 percent of the student body was from out of state, compared to 37 percent this fall.
• Aug. 6 marks the 65^th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. Visit the blog Lofty Ambitions to read the poem Hiroshima’s Secrets by Anna Leahy, Ph.D., associate professor, Wilkinson College, Department of English, and director of Tabula Poetica. The blog is co-written by Leahy and her husband, Douglas Dechow, Ph.D., associate librarian at Leatherby Libraries.
• There was plenty of commentary in the media on this week’s Prop. 8 ruling by Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker. Among them were School of Law professors John Eastman, Ph.D., in the Los Angeles Times and Katherine Darmer in the Orange County Register.
• There’s one week left to participate in the Leatherby Libraries summer Community of Readers, a blog of online book reviews. Check out a book from Leatherby, read it, post a review on the blog and voila! You earn a very dapper bookmark and are automatically entered into a drawing for the end-of-summer prizes.
