Poet Anna Leahy

When the Library of Congress announced yesterday that two-time Pulitzer Prize winner
W.S. Merwin
was the new U.S. poet laureate, naturally we called our own Anna Leahy, Ph.D., associate professor, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English, and director of
Chapman University’s Tabula Poetica
, for her take on the news.

She applauded the choice as timely and “bold” in the comments section of the
Los Angeles Times story
on the announcement. And she told Happenings that Merwin is a favorite of hers and Carmichael Peters, Ph.D., assistant professor, Wilkinson College,  Department of Religious Studies.

“Merwin has used his poetry to convey really large ideas. He’s thought of as being anti war and pro environment, and that seems incredibly timely for right now. … He’s incredibly attentive to the way language can work to join images and ideas,” Leahy said.

Leahy’s collection
Constituents of Matter
won the Wick Poetry Prize and was published by Kent State University Press.  Tabula Poetica recently announced that Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rae Armantrout will open its fall poetry series.
