Steve Lavin, Chapman ’88, has been named the head men’s basketball coach at St. John’s University in New York.

At Lavin’s official introduction Wednesday St. John’s director of athletics Chris Monasch described Lavin as “a hard worker, a man with a vision, a professional, a team player, someone who would fit in the University.”

Lavin has been an analyst for ESPN since 2003 and was UCLA head coach from 1996 to 2003. In 2001 Lavin was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. The Chapman alumnus also serves on Chapman University’s Board of Governors.
